Ethics in a Digital World
Breaking news. How do traditional standards change when you're covering a breaking news story with continual updates of fragments of the story? What are your standards for accuracy and fairness? How do you stay first with the news while guarding against false reports that circulate during emotional events? How do you correct errors that occur in the breaking story? When does fairness require that you get response to a claim or charge before publishing anything online? Or does fairness come not in each update but in the whole day's flow of updates?
Do you allow staff members to comment anonymously on your site or elsewhere?
The seminar will be presented by Steve Buttry, editor of The Gazette, Cedar Rapis, Iowa. Buttry has been an editor, reporter and writing coach in both community and metro newsrooms for more than 30 years.
Blogging. What guidelines should you have for reporters as they blog, whether for accuracy and verification in live blogging a news story or matters of fairness, commentary, opinion, taste? What guidelines, if any, should you have for your staff in using material from public blogs, in private blogs your staff members write on personal sites? Ethical dilemmas of user generated content. This will cover such topics as anonymous comments, fairness, libel, user reviews, community blogs, wikis, user submitted photos and videos. We will discuss issues such as registration, advance review of user submissions and monitoring of user comments and submissions.
